Dark Room

I went into this room. It was dark and chilly. It's somewhat like being in a cave in shelter from a thunderstorm, you feel safe from what's outside but you are terrified of what you might find inside.

Anyways, I closed the door and the only source of light behind me, took a few steps forward and realised that it's not a good idea to continue walking when all you can see is pitch black space.

So I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, my science teacher's voice rang in my head, explaining how our eyes would adjust itself to allow more light in under such conditions.

I opened my eyes. It took a few seconds but eventually outlines slowly crept out around me. It was as if they were hiding behind the walls and beneath the floors before this. Feeling more confident now, I stuck out my arms like a walking zombie and started each step with a tiny kick to avoid walking into anything.

I just remembered why I am in the room in the first place. A tennis ball. I do not play tennis because being able to serve only does not count. The tennis ball was not given to me and neither was it stolen by me. It is not mine. I do not own it. It just happened to be with me ever since about less than a decade ago. There were times I see it on the table behind the television, sometimes next to the old printer, anywhere really. Sometimes I see it everyday, sometimes I don't see it for weeks. No, the tennis ball is not haunted despite how it may sound like one. Yes, it is just an old tennis ball.

About five steps from where I was standing, I kicked something heavy. My right toe stung leaving my entire foot in numbing pain. I knew at that moment that the wound beneath the toe nail would have to restart its healing process.

Something sitting on top of whatever it was I kicked rolled off, bounced once and rolled further away. The tennis ball. I had half a mind to go chasing after it but decided against it. Instead I just stood there and watched the fuzzy outline disappear. I just stood there.

I am not a big fan of the whole fate idea. To me fate sounds more like an excuse than a reason. However, at that moment I gave in to fate. I turned around and made my way slowly back to the door. I noticed there was a little knob next to the door. I gave the knob a turn and the room slowly filled up with a dull yellow light. I smiled to myself turned the knob the other way and walked out of the room.

Moral of the story: Always turn on the lamp when entering a dark room !

You know that you are no longer a child when you no longer have the privilege to have the crab's pincer during dinner. Maybe we should really act like it.
